It’s a scary word, no matter how you slice it. Maybe you’ve personally heard those words. Chances are you know someone who has.
So what would you do if you found out that you had cancer?
It began thousands of years ago in Paradise when Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (look up Genesis 2:17 and 3:1-11). As a result of their sin and disobedience, God was forced to expel them from His holy presence. At that moment, they began to die physically and now the whole earth is cursed (which is why we have natural disasters and diseases like cancer).
What’s worse, their sin DNA has now been passed down to every other person.
Romans 5:12 says, “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned.”
Romans 3:23 says, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Romans 6;23 says, “For the wages of sin is death.”
That paints a very bleak picture for us. We all have spiritual cancer that separates us from God and brings death and there’s nothing we can do about it. It also puts God in a very difficult place. He loved us so much that He created us to have a beautiful, perfect relationship with Him. But we blew it. God’s holiness demands that we pay for our rebellion with our lives, but He still loves us and wants to be with us. So what could He do? He did the only thing He could. He allowed for a substitute to take our death penalty, our cancer, for us. But it couldn’t be just any substitute. It had to be such a perfect substitute that it would suffice for the sins of the whole world. His only choice was His only Son, Jesus Christ. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Let me put it another way. We have cancer that comes with an eternal death sentence. But God sent His Son Jesus to take our cancer away and give us life with Him instead. How did He do that? By being nailed to a cross and left to die. He died so we don’t have to. Now, of course, that doesn’t mean that everyone will be “magically” cured. This cure is only available to those who ask for it, only to those who are serious about getting well. John 1:12 says, “Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God”. Acts 16:31 says, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.”
Mind you, that’s not just a one dose treatment. It’s a lifetime of believing in and following and enjoying a beautiful relationship with God, the kind of relationship that He originally intended. So, now that you know you have cancer, what will you do?

So what would you do if you found out that you had cancer?
- Deny it and go on living your life, hoping it will go away on its own?
- Choose your treatments based on how convenient or painless they are?
- Trust your doctors and follow their advice, no matter what?

- Deny it and go on living your life, hoping it will go away? It won’t. Countless others have done this, and they’re headed for hell as a result.
- Pick and choose your treatments based on how convenient or painless they are? If you approached cancer with that attitude, what do you think the outcome would be? Following Christ isn’t convenient or painless. But He’s more than worth it. What’s more, He’s the only treatment that works.
- Trust your doctors and follow their advice, no matter what? That’s exactly what our Heavenly Doctor tells us to do. Jesus Himself says in John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Only the blood of Jesus can cure you and only if you seek His cure with all your heart. Trust Him. He loves you and wants to save you from your spiritual cancer.
